What are the odds of running into someone you know in a city of 6 million people? Is it 6 million? Too lazy to check. It’s a lot, anyway.
Today I sat at happy hour with coworkers when I suddenly said, “Oh look, it’s my ex-boyfriend.” All nonchalant, like I run into ex-boyfriends all the time (I do not).
My ex and I caught up and it was all lovely and fine (it was many years ago and he is not one of the few men from my past that I hate.)
My coworker, confused by my fake nonchalance, asked me if that wasn’t, in fact, very random, or if that was just something that happened when you live and work in the city. I don’t really know the answer. A little of both, I guess.
I texted my friend Rachel and she echoed the same wonder.
So my question is, literally: what are the odds? Obviously, it depends on how many people you know and if your home/work/bar paths cross and such. But I would just like odds for my specific life. Someone do the math for me?
